A great site is useless unless people know where to find you. This is where search engine optimization services come in handy. The methods used to keep your site in the top pages of Google for a long time will depend on if you know how Google ranks it index. Since only the engineers employed by Google know the answer, it is up to the rest of us to speculate on what may work, and what we know doesn't work. What would you do if you were in one of the top spots in Google's index for your most popular keyword? Do you realize that many millionaires have made their fortune by having a top rank in Google? Google is the most popular search engine in the WORLD and has no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Google Search Optimization has to be part of your marketing strategy.

Thanks for your comment. If you have an established domain that already ranks with lots of legit inbound links and then someone buys links. The links will likely be disregarded by google. But if you are just starting out and most or all of your links come from shady link exchanges or paid link sites you could be in trouble. At very least the site is going to get flagged for manual review. At worst the human review of the site could result in you getting penalized or delisted. As with all offsite SEO it is a judgement call based on the risk/reward. Google is working hard to eliminate the reward of paid links, and you are risking a manual review of your site and links.

This is a good article. If paid links presented a significant risk to your site’s ability to rank, it would become an effective method of Googlebowling. Neither Google nor any other search engine has the ability to identify who is responsible for purchasing the links pointing toward your site. At any given moment, I can go out and purchase links pointing to a competitor’s site and report them for paid links. It is not in Google’s interest to turn paid links into a negative factor; rather, they intend to devalue paid links altogether.
